in northern virginia where a few vehies got stuck in high water. our team coverage of this wet day continues now with news 4's tracee wilkins in annandale, virginia. >> reporter: here in northern virginia, a big mess with plenty of roads closed throughout the area. here on this road, another example of why you should not try your hand at high water. it was a wet, long, miserable morning commute that started for a lot of drivers on the inner loop of the beltway, after a tractor trailer jackknifed at the 270 split. fuel poured from the truck causing major backups throughout the morning commute. anwhile, in annandale on woodburn road, a v-dot worker says a husband and wife drove through the roadblock and tried to g through this standing water but didn't make it. they both had to be rescued. the water stood about two feet on thear side and a foot and a half on the side the driver tried to go through. >> i work right on woodburn road. i haven't been down there, but i'm wondering what it's like. >> reporter: v-dot crews surveyed flood-prone areas for the possibility of road closures, water ran thr

with maryland license plates. >>> also making headlines being homes in a virginia subdivision reduced to rubble. now, firefighters want to know what started this massive fire in manassas. as many as 16 people have been forced from their homes because of this fire. the fire broke out around 3:30 yesterday afternoon along tillot loop. one woman was taken to the hospital from just the shock of seeing her home burned to the ground. it took firefighters an hour and a half to bring that blaze under control. they believe the fire started in the middle house and then quickly spread in both directions from there. now, again, three homes were destroyed. five others were damaged. and the red cross is helping displaced families find temporary shelter. still no word on what started a fire that killed a virginia mother and two of her children. ally anderson saved three of her children as her lorton town home burned on wednesday. she managed to lower them out a window down to their uncle but then she went back to get her youngest sons but neither she nor her sons made it out. neighbors tried to help out but c

and thunderstorms extend from here all the way into the carolinas. the center is in west virginia. you cannot see it better on the satellite imagery. the circulation is there -- you can see better on the satellite imagery. you can see some breaks in the overcast in virginia. i think we will get some sun this afternoon. the evening commute will be much better than the morning commute. this system will push off over the next six to 12 hours. there is another front waiting in the wings at the great lakes. it will come through wednesday night with another chance for rain showers. upper 60's and low 70's right now. relatively mild for this time of the morning in september. we should make it to around 80 this afternoon. showers and thunderstorms this morning and clearing. partly cloudy tonight. temperatures drop back into the low 60's. most of tomorrow will be dry. there could be some rain coming back wednesday night and during the day on thursday. friday night into saturday morning, we could see another round of rain showers. we wind up with the chilly weather with highs in the 60's and overnight lows

that won't last much longer. look at when's coming across virginia and the carolinas. extreme tropical moisture is moving directly toward our region. i well take a closer view and look at the rainfall numbers. just take a look at when's happening. a batch of heavy rain and thunderstorms across portions of frederick county headed to our west. another batch coming from the south. heavy rain to the south of our region right now. that will look at the rainfall totals. some are extremely impressive particularly along the bay. all along the bay corridor, 5, 6, 7, 8 inches in some spots. we've had reports of 10 inches. eastern shore a lot less. it is a quick cutoff. 3 inches or so, 2 1/2 out to the west. right along the bay, just east of the city, harford county right through eastern baltimore county is where we've seen the high, high rainfall totals. these are just estimates. some areas have had even more. joining me now bernadette woods has had a look at the numbers. some are really incredible. >> even where it falls off, we're talking a few inches of rain. the highest amounts we've seen wi

, thank you. >> this one in virginia. and they were saying there was no sign of the accelerant here. they are just not sure what caused a fire to kill anita brikman mother and two of her children. they are still on the story and peggy, we know that three other children survived. what do we know about them and how they are doing tonight? >> reporter: well, the twod older children, an 8-year-old girl and a 6-year-old boy, they are both fine tonight. and in fact, they could have been released from children's hospital. and the father, they did not want to leave, so they will all be released tomorrow. now, take a look. this is the burning house that the three children escape from. the older two jumped out of the two-story window. and their mom, she was able to drop the baby into the arms of a friend. she saved those three kids lives, but she could not save herself or her 5-year-old. the family is trying to keep up the spirits by focusing on the three children that survived. and there is no smoke in their lungs. they are healthy, they were up day-to-day. the baby is doing great right now.

now. --7 g-k#wennsylvania is in the's right now. out in west virginia, talk about some nasty weather. -- a,x-qsout in the atlantic cot talk about some nasty weather. this is some of the late evening pictures from the nasa satellite. and this is from the other satellite. this is the eye. it is 25 miles across. with these super hurricanes you can almost see some swirls inside that are almost like many tornadoes. -- mini tornadoes. some of those winds could be up to 200 miles per hour. the good news is, no threat whatsoever to the eastern united states. an increasing threat to spot in the bermuda area. we will keep a careful eye on that. in the meantime, with high pressure in on us, it will be a delightful, clear night. a delightful day again tomorrow. a lot of sunshine and on the breezy side with northwesterly winds bringing it dreier, cooler air. and a light front may bring has a few light showers, but still on a dry pattern for us. that half inch of rain that we had saturday in 2008 was really needed. -- into sunday was what we really needed. >> coming up, honors for student-athlete

drivers coming out of virginia to commit to 270 and then those drivers who are merely take 2g 70 to continue their trip out of virginia. let me show you. this is the pa poen. i promise you the delays are pretty substantial. look at that. nothing is moving on 270 north. obviously so witho lanes open and these lanes do kick back as you might imagine to the capital beltway. it was a very nasty commute a you made your approach. as y can see, inching along painfully slow and the inner loop, by the way, is headed away from the camera here up toward e top of your screens, continue onto 270. and then again as we make the pass, democracy boulevard, it is just"i inching along. unfortunately they're moving the cameras around because it is a live accident. the ramp that comes around is a flyover ramp to continue on the hov lanes to continue northbound ong 270. the best workaround, there's not really a direct one, but 29 working its way through bethesda. but those lays -- excuse me -- those workarounds are not going to last for a very long time because a lot of the driversre going to have the
